August 25, 2016 at Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Free
Insects, humans, and spiders are among the many anthropomorphed puppets featured in Puppetry Arts New York’s free public performance of a musical about faith and the suicide of a gay teenage boy, called "Anthropomorphic." Hosted at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, puppeteers will perform highlights from the musical using multiple styles of puppetry, including Bunraku, shadow, and rod puppetry. Collaborating with arranger and orchestrator Aaron Latina, vocalists will tell the story of Wesley, who having taken his life, falls into a purgatory of his mind where he is set on a journey to discover that he is someone to be loved.
August 25, 2016 at LGBT Community Center, $15
After being wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two little girls during the Satanic Panic witch-hunt era of the 80s and 90s, Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh and Anna Vasquez—four Latina lesbians—fight against mythology, homophobia and prosecutorial fervor in their struggle for exoneration in this riveting 'true crime' tale. This bizarre case is the first to be adjudicated under momentous new legislation: for the first time in U.S. history, wrongfully convicted innocents can challenge convictions based on debunked scientific evidence. Winner of the Outfest Documentary Grand Jury Prize and the Frameline Outstanding Documentary Jury Award. Tickets and more information can be found at https://gaycenter.org/southwestofsalem
August 25, 2016 at Teatro SEA at the Clemente, $18
In the wake of an act of violence committed by charismatic high school senior Michael against devout freshman Liana, a handful of teens try to piece together the irrefutable truth; only to find that it may not exist. Weaving ancient tradition with now, #Blessed is a play about faith, rape culture, and what it means to be a young woman today. Premiering at FringeNYC this August, it is a modern day book of revelations. #Blessed in presented by Semicolon Theatre Company, a company run entirely by artists twenty-one and younger.
