West End Girls every Monday night!
As someone who works in the neighborhood of Chelsea every day, sometimes I wonder where all the lesbians are.   I see them at Cattyshack in Brooklyn and I see some at Henrietta’s in the west village. As for Chelsea, I see a lot more protein shakes and bronzer. This is why West End Girls had been on my “check-it-out” list since its inception in April. Hosted by Coco Obayda and Mel at HK Lounge on 39th and 9th, West End Girls is just a stone’s throw from Chelsea and is snuggled in between the oft hellish Monday and the ‘almost-hump-day’ Tuesday. That’s right, this party helps keep the weekend going for one more night, starting at 7pm every Monday night. Drink specials include 2-4-1 drinks until 9pm plus $5 Absolute Vodka till 11pm and entertainment includes Go-Go Goddesses Persuasion, Cherry Bomb and Natalia allllll night. DJ Sophia H and Dj Stacy rotate every other Monday, meaning last night I got to dance to the house music spun by DJ Stacy. I’m told Sophia’s playlists are usually more HipHop dominated if that's what shakes your hips a little harder. The crowd is a laid-back mix of young professionals, students, more mature ladies and a few surprise VIPS thrown in. My West End Girls night included The L-Word’s Elizabeth Keener (Dawn Denbo) and girlfriend along with 3Way’s Jill Bennett. Of course, the dominant theme of the night was the birthday party being thrown for the gorgeous girlfriend of GO! Magazine’s Devon Kirkpatrick. Mylar balloons and bubblegum cigars were a lovely touch.   For those unfamiliar with HK Lounge, it is a swanky joint, though notably small. It is a fat L shape with the bar along the back wall and candles nested in to the walls of the entry section. This places the dance floor rather close to the bar space but somehow it works. With food served at the affiliated restaurant next door, your Monday night just got booked up!   Check out West End Girls every Monday night at HK Lounge, 405 W. 39th between 9th and 10th ave. from 8pm till 4am.

KIN give surprise free show at HK Lounge
Picture the scene: HK Lounge, Wednesday night, wall-to-wall Chelsea gay boys.   The usual.   Now, add Lesbian rap duo KIN to the party and suddenly the situation is just a little more fresh, right? The surprise free show on May 14th at the Manhattan bar was a deliciously odd mix of performer and audience but KIN was definitely able to pull it off. Members Nor and IQ, hailing from Mt. Vernon, NY, have been performing as KIN for over 7 years with significant play over seas and in Canada. Used to the challenge of the US major labels, KIN stepped it up for the tricky HK Lounge crowd, providing a breathable break from the house music that had been playing all night. Dominating the makeshift staircase stage, Nor and IQ worked the audience with songs from their new EP, Rock Star and after two songs, the Chelsea boys weren’t exactly nodding on beat but at least they were smiling.   Learn more about KIN at www.myspace.com/ KIN4life or www.kin4life.com
